Cecil Dick
Cecil Dick was regarded as the "Father of Cherokee Traditional Art." The Sequoyah Medal the highest honor conferred by the Cherokee Nation was presented to Cecil in 1983. For more than 50 years Cecil recorded Cherokee history and culture through his art. He has received almost every award possible in the Indian Art World.
Janet Smith
Janet Lamon Smith, Cherokee Nation tribal member, was born in Tahlequah, OK. She is the direct descendant of Cherokee Chief Richard Field. Janet is named Nv Tse (Nancy - one who walks about as in spirit) for both maternal and paternal great grandmothers.
P.J. Gilliam
Cherokee Nation tribal member P.J. was born in Tahlequah, the capital of the
Cherokee Nation. She is a multi-faceted artist and creates traditional and
contemporary pottery as well as painting. She has a Fine
Art degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.
Joan Hill
Joan Hill, one of the Nation's foremost Native American artist is a Creek Nation tribal member with Cherokee Ancestry. She descends from prominent families in the history of the Creek and Cherokee Nations. Her Indian name is Chea-se-quah (Redbird) after her maternal grandfather, and her great grandfather,Redbird Harris,who was a full brother to C.J. Harris, Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1891-1895.
Her works portray tribal customs and the mythological stories of creation and the history of her people. They are authentic, down to the last detail, because of the extensive research that accompanies each work.
A native of Muskogee, OK her studio is located at her home. Her home is located on her families Indian Allotment which is located on the site of Confederate Fort Davis.
A former public school teacher, she now studies and paints full time. She has won more than 200 awards for her work in both traditional and non-traditional styles of painting.
Many of her paintings are in the permanent public collections of museums and colleges among which are the United States Department of the Interior, the Philbrook Museum, Heard Museum, and the Museum of the American Indian.
Joan was chosen as the Honored One at Red Earth and recently was honored as Distinguished Alumni of the Year from Northeastern State University.
